There is no right or wrong way to grieve. There is no straight line of feelings to be felt. There is no map or checkmarks to be navigated. Grief is a feeling, and it is complex and unique to each individual. In grief counselling, the goal is to help you make sense of what you feel and explore those feelings in a safe and supportive space.
Talking with a counsellor is different than talking with friends. Friends don't want to see you in pain, and they often want to rush in and comfort you. They do this because they want you to feel better, to be cheered up and because they might be uncomfortable with the pain you feel. A counsellor is different. A counsellor also doesn't want to see you in pain, but at the same time, we know it is important to feel the feelings and to explore them and create opportunities for you to express whatever you are feeling.
Pain is a symptom of a wound that needs time to heal. If we ignore or cover up the pain, the wound will fester and get worse.
It's also important to understand that grief and loss go beyond the death of loved ones. We can feel grief around not having children, not achieving specific career goals, losing a house to fire, a relationship ending, plans being cancelled, and life just not being what we imagined it would be.
If you are experiencing grief because of a loved one, or grief because of another type of loss and need to talk to someone, please call or email me to book a counselling session, 604.358.7580.

Look closely and you will see almost everyone carrying bags of cement on their shoulders. That's why it takes courage to get out of bed in the morning and climb into the day.
